Rose Uniacke, A Map of Makers

Rose Uniacke is one of London's leading interior designers, known for spare, considered interiors that draw heavily on the 20th-century Scandinavian Modernist tradition. Her studio commissioned a limited edition piece for clients and collectors: a set of two illustrated booklets, accompanied by a commissioned map, recording the workshops and showrooms of the most significant Modernist designers across Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

Rural Maps was commissioned to design the cartography. Close-up maps of Copenhagen and Stockholm key out the locations of named workshops and showrooms across each city. The wider map records the country-by-country distribution of the makers whose work informs Rose Uniacke's interiors.

The booklets carry vignettes about each designer alongside the maps. Interior photography is by Simon Upton, courtesy of Rose Uniacke. The full piece was designed by Mar Mar Co Studio.

The piece is given to Rose Uniacke's clients and to those with a particular interest in Scandinavian craftsmanship. A copy of the project is documented at marmarcostudio.com.

A map of a different kind: the workshops of twentieth-century Scandinavian design, for one of London's leading interior designers

Rose Uniacke is among London's most admired interior designers, known for spare, considered rooms that draw deeply on the twentieth-century Scandinavian modern tradition. Her studio commissioned a limited-edition piece for clients and collectors, a set of two illustrated booklets with a map at their heart, recording the workshops and showrooms of the most significant modernist makers across Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

The Cartography

Anthony was commissioned to draw the maps. Close-up plans of Copenhagen and Stockholm key out the named workshops and showrooms across each city, and a wider map sets down the country-by-country spread of the makers whose work informs Rose Uniacke's interiors. The booklets carry a vignette on each designer alongside the maps, so the piece reads as much as a guide to a tradition as a map of it.

A Map Beyond the Land

Most of Anthony's commissions record a piece of ground. This one records a body of work, a movement and its makers rather than an estate, and it is here for that reason: the same cartographic eye and hand, turned to a subject made entirely of culture.
